Sniffing Out Fear

So just the other day… I was walking along a street in New York City… and here comes a little boy….

and in his opposite direction comes great big dog (I know the dog as a gentle dog) ….

and as the great big dog goes by, the kid screams…

and I look over to the kid and I said what are you screaming about…

and he said well that dog just tried to bite me…

and I asked ‘did that really happen? …

and he said the great big dog opened up it’s mouth and was going to come and fight me…

and I said ‘how do you know it wanted to fight? Maybe instead it was yawning’ ….

what the dog really did… he was just passing by wagging his tail and so I said to the kid… just hold out your hand like this (palm down with the arm extended)

… and let the dog sniff you, he needs to get used to you and feel safe and they ended up playing…

Because even a dog who is taken care of by its master for years, that dog will still smell the food the master gives it. So who’s really afraid of who!

so often times… whenever it is that we fear something it’s the idea inside of our heads that we really get scared of… instead of what’s really going on in the real world.

Think deliberately to evaluate a situation and your environment in order to respond in the best way possible.

Remember, even a fifteen year old dog smells food that his owner gives him.
